Fangirling with Ruby KOKO

Hypnotic and filled with Intrigue, enter Ruby KOKO.

The Alt-Pop artist incorporates catchy beats, comedic and blunt honest lyrics along with a squeeze of 'I just can't quite put it down' vibes. Creating the kind of music you'd love to BLAST out of your car full volume, or listen to tracks such as 'Messed Up' laying in the sunshine.

So, first date style questions: tell us a bit about yourself! Where are you from, what do you do for fun etc? I'm from a little state called Maine, way up in north eastern USA. Right now I live in another state called Connecticut, unfortunately. For fun in the now times I just hang out with my cat and fingerboard, before COVID I would be traveling and playing gigs. Haha yeah absolutely, we can't wait for the day we can travel and go to gigs too! You’ve said you just want to buy your mum a house, but let’s get specific with what you’d have in your dream house. Wraparound porch? 10 bathrooms? A slide instead of stairs?

I grew up in a very poor family. I would buy my mom a house with all of that but my dream house is small and in the woods. I'm not into that minimalist living stuff but I would want just enough space for what I can handle. The past two years I was renting a larger house and I found myself using the extra space for stuff I shouldn't have wasted time on. You started out playing guitar in some metal bands, so tell us a bit about the move to/ blend with alt-pop. Yes joined a heavy metal band as a guitarist super young and then was geared into being a vocalist for a few other metal acts over the years. I've written pop music before but never put me singing or vocalizing over it it was only months and months into COVID that I finally tried something and ended up really having fun with it. I don't think there was much of a blend like I wish there was but it is fun playing hardcore guitar riffs, then cutting the distortion and just playing jazz chords with hella reverb. Who would be your dream dinner guests? Well if it's a dream I suppose it could be someone who's not alive right? I would love to see how a casual dinner with Walt Disney (I'm not a disney fan but he seems like a closeted jerk), Miki Matsubara(She died on my birthday, big sad) and my Uncle who just recently passed (He knew how to bring the party) that would be a sh*t show and I wouldn't care if it was just over a bowl of mac n dogs. Who are your top three influences? Vincent Bennett (Vocalist of The Acacia Strain), Liily (The band) and Vurro (Experimental Ragtime performer) Who are you fangirling over right now? Well I tagged Meat Canyon (Animation artist) in an instagram story post and he actually responded. I peed a lil. What was the first gig you ever went to? Went and saw Disturbed and Mushroomhead back in 2006? With my mom of course I was just a kid. First gig I ever played You released two songs in February: Wasted, and Messed Up. Give us an origin story for each of these. Messed Up is my baby, I spent almost two months (which honestly isn't very long) from start to finish on it. Compared to my other songs that I'll lay down and get a rough mix on it in a day or two and call it a day. Wasted was a song I wrote and recorded in a night a few days before it would have been one of my really great friend's birthday. It's really heavy because he would have loved that and being a solo artist I feel like I can kind of just float genres. Anything coming up that you can tease us all with? Honestly this is the hardest point in all my years of writing to come up with new material. I've laid down an albums worth of instrumentals but I can't seem to lay down vocals I like. I've been working with a really awesome chick from the UK so I think you'll be seeing a collab with her before you see any type of album from me. Where can we find you on socials? Instagram, Twitter and even tiktok is @yourfriendruby My youtube is just my name? or this link here
